Understanding Acerola Cherry and Uric Acid Wellness

Acerola cherry (Malpighia emarginata), also known as the Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry, is a tropical fruit recognized as one of the world's most concentrated natural sources of Vitamin C. It has attracted growing interest in the nutritional supplement space, particularly in the context of uric acid metabolism and overall wellness support.

What Is Acerola Cherry?

Unlike synthetic ascorbic acid, Acerola cherry delivers Vitamin C alongside naturally occurring bioflavonoids, polyphenols and antioxidant co-factors. These compounds work together in a way that isolated ascorbic acid cannot replicate. The whole-food matrix may support absorption and provide a broader spectrum of antioxidant activity.*

Vitamin C and Uric Acid Metabolism

Published research has examined the relationship between Vitamin C intake and healthy uric acid levels. One mechanism that has been studied is the uricosuric effect of Vitamin C — its ability to support normal uric acid excretion through the kidneys by competing with uric acid for reabsorption in the renal tubules.†

A meta-analysis published in Arthritis & Rheumatism examined multiple randomized controlled trials and found that Vitamin C supplementation was associated with support for healthy uric acid levels already within the normal range.† Individual results vary, and nutritional supplements should not be expected to produce identical results for every person.

Why Acerola Instead of Synthetic Vitamin C?

Gout Defense uses Vitamin C from Acerola cherry extract rather than synthetic ascorbic acid. This provides the same nutrient alongside naturally occurring bioflavonoids and polyphenols that may complement the overall formulation. It is also consistent with the formulation philosophy of using identifiable botanical sources wherever possible.

Part of the UricBalance Complex™

In Gout Defense, Acerola cherry is included as part of the Phase 03 UricBalance Complex™ — alongside Grape Seed Extract, Rose Hips, Quercetin, Boswellia serrata, Resveratrol and Hydrolyzed Collagen. Each ingredient in the complex has been individually studied in published research for its potential role in supporting normal uric acid metabolism, antioxidant defense or joint wellness.*
